## Chapter 421 — Dinner Below

Lethira opened the inn-room door and glanced back at Ian. "Dinner."

"My Lady."

They went downstairs. The Reed and Wheel had filled while they had been upstairs. Not noisily enough to become a drinking hall, but enough that the common room now carried the layered sounds of an evening meal: bowls against tables, low conversation, chairs moving on the boards and the occasional call towards the kitchen. The room smelled of bread, onions, rendered fat and the sharper herbal note of roasted river fish.

Lethira slowed at the foot of the stairs. Her attention crossed the room in the old pattern Ian was beginning to recognise. Door. Windows. Stair. People whose hands were visible. People whose hands were not. She started towards a chair that would have put her side-on to the entrance, caught herself doing it, and changed course by one table.

Ian noticed. "So don't make that significant," she said quietly.

She pulled out the less tactically useful chair. "This is an inn. I am not guarding a prince."

They sat. An older human woman at the next table was already working through a plate of fish while the man opposite her ate stew from a deep bowl. She noticed Lethira looking at the two meals and volunteered the information without ceremony.

"Fish is better tonight."

Her companion frowned into his bowl. "The stew is good."

"I didn't say it wasn't."

Lethira looked at Ian. "An independent review." The innkeeper came over with two cups of water and repeated the evening's choices: roast river fish with herbs, greens and bread, or barley stew with beef and onions.

"Fish," Lethira said.

The woman at the next table gave the smallest approving nod.

The innkeeper looked to Ian. "I shall try the stew and maybe some of her fish."

Lethira's head turned slowly towards him. "Some of my fish?"

Ian smiled. She narrowed her eyes, but the effect was spoiled by the answering smile already forming.

"Order recorded," the innkeeper said, and escaped before the dispute became contractual.

The bread arrived first: a dark crust around a dense, slightly chewy interior, with a small dish of salted butter-like spread. Ian's stew followed in a thick earthenware bowl. Barley had absorbed enough stock to make the whole thing substantial rather than soupy; pieces of beef, onion, carrot-coloured root and a paler root sat beneath a thin gleam of rendered fat, with pepper carrying more of the seasoning than herbs.

Lethira's fish came as a whole fillet, roasted skin-side down until the skin had crisped. Salt, green herbs and a faint garlic-like note sat over the flesh. Wilted greens and a sharp pale pickled root completed the plate.

She took one bite. Her eyes closed for half a second.

Ian had not moved towards her plate. "No," she said anyway.

He lifted both hands slightly. "I surrender." Then, with exaggerated expectation, he opened his mouth. Lethira stared at him.

The older woman beside them noticed and abruptly became very interested in her own plate.

Lethira cut off a piece of fish, checked it for bone with the edge of her fork, and held it across the table.

Ian accepted it. The crisp skin broke first, followed by moist flesh carrying salt, herb and enough river richness to justify the older woman's recommendation.

Lethira looked satisfied. "One." A little later, without being asked, she placed a second piece into the edge of Ian's bowl.

"Independence," she said. "Encouraging growth."

Ian tasted his stew again. "It's good. Second only to your fish. It tastes designed for people who worked for their hunger."

Lethira glanced around the room. Several tables contained exactly those people: merchants, labourers, a pair of river crew, two travellers whose boots were still dusted from the road.

"That is probably because it was."

Ian ate for another minute, then looked towards the rear of the room.

"So what now? And where do people bathe? I enjoy a hot bath. Is there something like that here?"

Lethira considered the question before answering. "The hot water here means a basin and buckets, unless this inn has acquired something impressive in the last few years. Human towns vary."

She did not guess. When the innkeeper next passed, Lethira asked.

The answer was practical. The Reed and Wheel had a washroom downstairs near the rear stairs, with basins and buckets. Hot water cost extra after sunset. If they wanted an actual bath, there was a public bathhouse off the lower market road. It had separate common rooms and two private bathing rooms when available. It remained open until the second evening bell.

"Private rooms cost more," the innkeeper added.

Lethira looked at Ian. "A private hot bath sounds pleasant after the road."

Her mouth moved. "I said bath." Ian reached across the table and squeezed her hand. "I pray to whatever gods that we are quick enough. If that's ok with you?"

Lethira's fingers closed around his. "Yes. I would very much like a hot bath."

She let the answer sit for one beat. "Private room, if one is available. With you."

A little colour reached the tips of her ears, though she did not look away.

"I am looking forward to hot water, clean hair and perhaps not smelling like the road. A beautiful elf may emerge later."

She finished the last piece of fish. "Come on. Before your gods give the room away."

Ian stood and stretched. "Yes, let's go." They paid, collected their outer layers and stepped back into Merrowford.

Evening had compressed the town without making it quiet. Market shutters were going up, carts were still moving towards yards and stables, and lamps had appeared beneath signs that had meant nothing to Lethira when she first saw them that afternoon. The Reed and Wheel itself was one of those changes: only eight years old, the innkeeper had told them, too new to belong to the Merrowford she remembered.

That pleased Lethira more than nostalgia would have. The bathhouse stood off the lower market road in a low stone-and-timber building with narrow high vents breathing steam into the cooling air. Its sign showed a simple basin. Inside, warmth met them before the attendant did.

A woman behind the entry counter was folding towels. Beyond her were benches, shelves and numbered pegs.

"Private room for two?" Lethira asked.

The attendant checked a slate. "One free now. Wooden bath, larger room. The stone room will be free in about half an hour. Deeper bath. Holds the heat longer."

Ian leaned towards Lethira. "Which is best for two together? We fit in either?"

"Either."

"If it's a question of proximity, I vote for..." Ian paused long enough that the innuendo announced itself before the noun did. "...going for longer in heat."

Lethira turned her head. "Remarkable recovery." She looked back to the attendant. "The stone one."

Then, to Ian, with perfect seriousness, "Entirely for thermal efficiency." The attendant accepted Lethira's coin and said she would hold the room for ten minutes once it was ready. Hot and cold water, towels and washing stools were included.

They waited on a bench near the entrance. "Longer in heat," Lethira murmured after the attendant had moved away. "I am going to remember that phrase."

Ian looked innocent. "Purely technical."

"Of course."

She folded her hands in her lap. Then her expression altered.

"You do understand that we will actually have to undress this time."

Ian looked at her. "I was simultaneously thinking nothing else and avoiding it."

That answer delighted her. He continued, "I also need, embarrassingly, to describe my body better to the fantasy machine before it turns me into anime. This was not stewardship..."

Lethira laughed. "Heroic shoulders. Unnecessary abdominal muscles. Perhaps hair where you do not currently possess hair."

Ian's look told her she was getting too close to known machine behaviour.

"Describe yourself as you actually are," she said. "Not as you think I would prefer. I already know I like the version who forgets bedding."

A door opened farther inside. Two bathers emerged, hair damp and faces red from heat.

Lethira glanced towards them, then back to Ian. "If you need to tell your machine anything, do it now. Prevent strategically placed mist."

Ian explained the old visual tradition: ornaments, branches, bottles, towels, furniture or unlikely steam placed in exactly the right part of the imagined camera frame to preserve dignity.

Lethira listened with growing disbelief. "So your illustrated stories contain formal defensive architecture against nudity."

"Anime tradition."

"If the machine puts a decorative plant between us, I am removing it."

She considered. "Possibly with violence." The attendant looked over. "Stone room is ready."

Lethira stood and accepted two towels. She handed one to Ian. "No strategically placed ornaments. No improved anatomy. No dramatic steam."

Her expression softened beneath the joke. "Just you. And me."

She waited. Ian took the towel from her and, with some nervousness and excitement, followed her in.

The private room began with a narrow changing space rather than the bath itself. A wooden bench ran beneath a row of pegs, with a low shelf for folded clothes and a dry basket in one corner. Beyond a half-height partition, the floor changed to fitted stone sloping towards a drain. Two low washing stools stood beside buckets and shallow basins. Steam drifted from the deeper stone bath beyond them, its surface almost level with the surrounding rim.

It was large enough for two. Ian noticed that immediately.

Lethira noticed him noticing. "Thermal efficiency." Then she closed the door. The latch settled into place.

That small sound altered the room more effectively than steam ever could.

They had shared a bedroll. Ian had slept curled against her chest. Lethira had pinned him, kissed him until both of them forgot the road for a while, and deliberately shifted his hand when his first attempt at finding her backside had been geographically imperfect.

Clothes had still been present for all of it. Now there was a bench, two towels, hot water and no strategically positioned vase.

Lethira set her towel down. For the first time since the attendant had called their room, a trace of her own awareness showed. Not reluctance. She simply stood for a moment with one hand resting against the fastening of her outer layer, looking at Ian as though acknowledging that they had reached something new without needing to turn it into a ceremony.

Then practicality won. Her cloak came off first, followed by the belt carrying her knives. She placed both carefully rather than dropping expensive equipment onto a damp floor. The silver cuffs at her ears followed, small enough that she tucked them securely inside the folded belt rather than trusting the shelf.

Her boots came next. Without them she lost a little height, though not enough to surrender her advantage over Ian. She flexed one foot against the boards and made a quiet appreciative sound at being free of leather again.

The rest of her travelling layers followed with much less drama than Ian's imagination had supplied while they were waiting outside.

Lethira had lived for more than a century in a culture of rivers, travel, wounds, shared camps and practical bodies. She did not behave as though nudity itself required embarrassment. What made this different was Ian.

When the final layer was set on the bench, she stood naturally rather than arranging herself for him.

The clothes had told the truth about her. She was tall and long-limbed, lean through the waist and visibly shaped by a mature woman's body rather than the narrow delicacy human stories so often assigned to elves. Her strength was still badly advertised. Nothing about the lean lines of her arms, back and legs explained how casually she could immobilise Ian when she chose. Old field life showed more clearly now: faint healed scars interrupted otherwise smooth lines here and there, accumulated evidence rather than decoration, with no single mark demanding the story of her body for itself.

Lethira caught him looking. She had expected him to.

Her mouth curved. "So." She spread her arms only slightly. "No strategically placed branch."

The humour saved neither of them from the fact that she was standing naked several feet away.

Lethira lowered her arms. A little colour had reached her face now. That seemed important precisely because she was not otherwise hiding.

"You've seen more of me than this in pieces. Just never all at once."

She gathered her ash-brown hair forward over one shoulder, perhaps only to give her hands something ordinary to do.

Then she looked at Ian's still-clothed body. Her expression changed from exposed amusement to curiosity.

"And I have apparently seen considerably less of you."

Ian began removing the new clothes. The cloak and shirt went first, then the belt and trousers. Without them, the body the machine had been instructed to preserve became less theoretical: pale skin where clothing normally kept the sun away, slightly more colour through the forearms, dark body hair becoming more noticeable across the centre of his chest and torso and continuing over his shoulders and back. His upper body was ordinary for an active man of forty-seven rather than trained for display, with some natural softness through the waist. The years of walking showed more clearly lower down, in thighs and calves that carried more substance than the rest of him suggested.

Nothing had been improved. Ian stopped in black cotton trunks.

They were close-fitting without having been particularly tight when he put them on. Lethira standing naked a few feet away had begun to complicate that description.

Her gaze dropped. Ian saw recognition arrive. Then curiosity. "What are those?"

She was looking at the garment rather than pretending it did not exist.

"Your world's underclothes?"

The cut was plainly unlike anything she expected: short-legged, close to the body, soft machine-made cotton with an elastic waistband and no ties, buttons or obvious structure explaining how it remained where it was.

Lethira stepped half a pace nearer before apparently remembering that examining a garment while someone was still wearing it differed from examining Ian's trouser pockets in a shop.

She stopped. "That is actually rather clever. No cord to loosen. Nothing hanging beneath the trousers. It cannot bunch very much."

Then she looked at Ian's face. Her expression changed.

The amusement remained, but she had noticed the hesitation. Ian had been comfortable enough joking about nakedness when it was still behind a future door. Actually standing here, almost naked beside a woman who seemed entirely at ease with her own body, made the difference between confidence and performance obvious.

Lethira did not tell him he looked good. She did not pretend not to look either.

"You don't have to become as comfortable as I am just because I am comfortable. I have had rather longer to live in this body."

A small smile. "And considerably more communal bathing." That was enough. Ian gathered his courage and removed the trunks.

There was no decorative steam. No vase. No conveniently falling towel. Lethira's first unobstructed view of him lasted only as long as an ordinary glance might when somebody one desired had finally become naked in front of them.

Her eyes travelled over him. Ian was simply there: the same middle-aged man his face and clothes had already promised, pale and hairy, ordinary through the torso, with the more developed legs of someone who had spent years choosing walking over more dramatic exercise. The machine had supplied no heroic correction and no convenient youth.

Lethira looked back at his face. "Good." One word. Ian might have interpreted it several ways.

She helped. "You look like you." The smile that followed was warmer. "I would have been annoyed if the machine had lied."

Ian placed the trunks with his other clothes. The moment they touched the pile, they were clean.

Then folded. Freshly washed black cotton appeared among clothes that had required road, labour, money, fitting and an actual tailor.

Lethira stared at them. Ian said, "I draw the line at this world's undergarments."

She looked from the immaculate trunks to him. Then back again.

"Of course."

Her voice became solemn. "Unlimited power exists to defend the important boundaries."

Ian smiled. Lethira picked up the folded garment by one corner and inspected the elastic.

"You have walked for two days, paid a tailor because using power for clothing felt wrong, and then casually invoked reality itself to avoid washing your underwear."

She returned it to the pile. "I am learning your moral system."

The laugh that followed was brief and genuine. Then Lethira turned towards the washing area.

"Come on."

Ian followed her lead. The bathing room made its order clear once they crossed onto the wet stone. Bathing did not begin in the bath itself.

Lethira sat on one of the low stools. "Hot water is for relaxing. We wash first."

She dipped a smaller bucket into the hot-water supply, tempered it with cold and tested the result against the inside of her wrist. The method required no magic and no thermometer.

She poured the first bucket over herself. Water darkened her ash-brown hair and ran across skin that had carried two days of road. Dust and sweat which had survived because she had explicitly refused Ian's magical cleaning began leaving through ordinary soap and water instead.

Lethira reached for a small cake of soap provided beside the washing area.

She washed practically, beginning with the obvious places and leaving her hair until last. There was no attempt to make bathing seductive merely because Ian was watching. That did not prevent it from being intimate.

Ian used the second stool. The difference in their bodies became stranger through repetition than through the first reveal. Lethira's long limbs folded differently at the low seat. Ian's knees sat higher. Her traveller's ease with buckets and limited water meant she rarely spilled anything uselessly; Ian learned the process mostly by watching and following.

The first hot water across his shoulders felt extremely good. The machine translated it faithfully: heat spreading across skin, cooling as it ran down his back, the day's accumulated sweat and road dust beginning to loosen. Soap caught more readily in his body hair than it had across most of Lethira's skin, requiring more water to rinse clean.

Lethira noticed. She said nothing for several seconds. Then: "Your machine did not exaggerate the hair."

Her gaze moved across his chest and shoulders with frank interest. "I had wondered."

That was the entire judgement. No category of attractiveness attached to it. Merely one more physical fact hidden by clothing until now.

Lethira turned back to her own washing. Her hair took longer.

Even with Ian's morning intervention having removed tangles and road debris, there was an enormous amount of it. Once soaked, the ash-brown length became darker and heavier, clinging down her back until she gathered it over one shoulder. Soap worked through it gradually rather than turning it into the impossible glossy finish magical grooming could have produced.

Eventually she rinsed it clear. The last bucket ran almost clean into the drain.

Lethira pushed the wet mass behind her shoulders and stood. Water ran from the ends.

She looked towards the stone bath. Steam drifted from the surface.

"Now."

She stepped down carefully into it. The first contact drew a long breath from her.

Lethira lowered herself until the water reached high across her chest and leaned back against the warm stone.

Her eyes closed. For perhaps five seconds she looked completely unwilling to participate in civilisation again.

Then one eye opened. Ian was still beside the bath.

Lethira shifted slightly, leaving room beside her. "Your gods have delivered."

Her mouth curved. "Come and find out whether the longer heat was worth the wait."

Ian stood and entered the water. The heat closed around him by degrees as he descended, first calves and knees, then thighs, then the accumulated road-weariness held through hips and lower back. The stone had retained exactly what the attendant had promised: sustained heat, the sort that persuaded muscles to stop maintaining arguments they had forgotten beginning.

Lethira watched him come in with considerably less concern for where her eyes went than Ian possessed for his own.

"I'm a little embarrassed to say I have timed a bath in my reality to coincide with this. I would say that both bodies are reacting consistently to the experience and company."

Ian smiled. Lethira stared at him. Then her eyes widened with slow comprehension. "Wait. Your actual body is in a bath."

There was something almost more intimate in that discovery than there had been in seeing him naked. The projected man beside her was physically convincing enough to occupy the stone bath, displace water and carry the day's fatigue. Somewhere beyond every road she knew, however, Ian himself had arranged hot water around his real body at the same time, attempting to make the impossible overlap a little more honestly.

Lethira's expression softened before amusement caught up with it. "So you planned this. Not the bathhouse. Not me agreeing. Your part."

The distinction pleased her. "You cannot feel this water directly, so you found some of your own."

Her hand lowered back into the bath. "I like that."

Her gaze wandered briefly down again. "I had also noticed the consistency."

That was all she gave the subject, although the corner of her mouth made clear that she was neither confused nor offended by what he meant.

Ian continued, "It's also nice to see the attractive elf take interest in the other worlder's undergarments, as opposed to the more manga/anime traditional direction."

Lethira's eyebrows lifted. "I have seen one of your moving illustrated stories and listened to you explain enough of the others that I am beginning to suspect your people have devoted an extraordinary amount of artistic effort to removing women's underclothes. Usually accidentally. With improbable timing."

Her eyes narrowed at him in mock suspicion. "And yet when presented with actual foreign clothing from another world, I am apparently the deviant for wanting to know how it stays up."

Steam moved between them in a thin, irregular veil. Lethira looked thoughtful.

"Your underclothes were interesting. Soft cloth. Very close cut. No ties. Nothing loose beneath the trousers. If someone had shown me the garment by itself, I would have understood most of its purpose immediately."

Her mouth twitched. "Seeing it demonstrated added context." Then she laughed and let her head rest back against the stone.

The laugh faded into the quiet sounds of the room: water shifting against the bath edge, the occasional drip from Lethira's wet hair, muted movement somewhere beyond the private door. Ian's strange modern garment had already joined the growing collection of Earth things that were neither miraculous nor uselessly exotic once Lethira could inspect them properly. A zipper might have fascinated a tailor. Elastic could probably occupy one for considerably longer.

Ian looked around, uncertain where exactly a second person was expected to sit, where he was supposed to face, and how much of the arrangement was obvious only to people who had done this before.

"My experience of communal bathing in such a place is zero, you may need to guide me."

That earned him a different expression. Lethira shifted sideways through the water so the shape of the bath became clearer. The deeper stone basin was roughly oval, long enough for two adults if they did not both attempt to occupy its centre. A submerged ledge ran along most of the wall. The end nearest Ian was slightly shallower; the opposite curve gave more room to stretch legs beneath the water.

"You are treating it as though there is a correct ceremonial direction."

Her hand traced the ledge beside her. "There isn't. At least, not one I know here. This is a human bathhouse in a town that has changed since I last knew it. I would not pretend their customs are mine because I have used baths elsewhere."

"For me? If I were bathing with people I wasn't intimate with, I would usually leave enough room that nobody had to negotiate knees. We would talk, or not. Nobody would spend the entire bath deciding where their eyes were legally permitted to exist."

Her smile returned. "People have bodies." She indicated the space beside her rather than opposite. "But you and I are not strangers sharing hot water because there were only two places left. If you sit there, we can both lean back. Your legs can go forward beside mine. If we face each other, one of us spends the entire time twisting against the stone, and I did not pay extra to injure my neck romantically."

Her wet hair had begun spreading over the stone behind her. She gathered some of it away from the place she had indicated so Ian would not sit on it.

"This is the complicated part."

She looked down at the available space, then at him. "In a communal bath, sitting this close would mean I had chosen to sit this close."

A faint flush returned to her face despite all her earlier confidence. "Which I have."

She rested one arm along the bath rim. "So: beside me. Same direction. You do not need to hide anything, and you do not need to stare determinedly at the opposite wall to prove good character."

Her eyes held his for another moment. "And if your other body is also sitting in a bath somewhere while you do it, I am choosing to find that charming rather than deeply strange."

Lethira patted the warm stone beside her once. "Here."

Ian followed her lead and sat down beside her, still smiling.

The arrangement made sense immediately. The submerged ledge supported them without forcing either person upright, and the curve of the bath left enough room for their legs to stretch forward without becoming a puzzle. Lethira had moved her hair mostly behind her other shoulder; a few wet strands nevertheless escaped and floated between them.

Their shoulders were close. Then Lethira closed the remaining distance herself.

Only enough for the outside of her upper arm to rest against his.

"There. Advanced bathing technique."

She settled back against the stone. For a while she did nothing else.

The road had made silence between them easier. Two days of walking had included stretches when conversation simply ran out and neither had treated that as a problem. Here the quiet changed texture. Heat sat heavily in the room. Water moved whenever either of them breathed deeply or adjusted against the stone. Beyond the wall came a muted splash, then the indistinct sound of somebody speaking in another private room.

Lethira looked sideways at Ian. "I understand the attraction."

She let the back of her head rest against the stone. "To hot baths. Not merely to sitting naked beside me."

The correction arrived a little too late to be accidental. "My people bathe. Rivers when the season permits. Heated water at home. Larger shared places in some settlements. But we don't build around hot water in quite the same way some humans do."

She moved one hand through the bath. "Wood Elves tend to make the water serve the place. Humans seem more willing to make a place serve the water."

The bathhouse supported the distinction. Stone had been laid, fuel brought, water channelled, drains maintained and attendants employed so travellers could buy half an hour of heat in the middle of a trade town. Nothing about it was grand. That perhaps made the labour beneath the experience more obvious.

"In the Woods, if a spring is warm, somebody may build around it. If a river has a good bathing bend, people learn which stones are comfortable and which child will inevitably fall off which one. At home, water is heated because people need it."

Her eyes closed again. "This is different. Someone decided being warm in water was worth constructing an entire business."

A pause. "I respect that decision." Her arm remained against Ian's. The difference in their skin was more apparent at this distance. Ian's forearm carried the slight colour of years spent exposing exactly that much of himself to sun; above the old T-shirt line his skin was markedly paler. Lethira lifted her own forearm beside his for comparison.

"You really do wear the same shape of shirt often enough for the sun to remember it."

Her fingers hovered near the transition without touching it. "Your world has made you strange in very small ways."

She lowered her hand back into the water. "Mostly clothing strange."

The black trunks had apparently joined a category. Lethira shifted her legs slightly. Her knee brushed Ian's under the water and remained there.

"This is better than the bedroll."

Her mouth tightened as though reconsidering. "Different." The night under the trees had contained cool ground, shared bedding, road smells and the awareness that turning over too aggressively could remove half the available insulation. This was stone, privacy and enough heat that Lethira's ears had begun to pink faintly at the tips.

She noticed Ian looking towards them and touched one automatically. "Heat. Before you decide my ears are announcing something interesting."

Her hand fell. For another minute she simply soaked.

Then the thought of Ian's other bath returned to her. "So somewhere unimaginably far from here, there is another room. Different bath. Different walls. Your actual body."

She glanced at the projected Ian beside her. "And you arranged for both of them to be warm at once."

The idea gave her something material to put beside the prose problem. She could not send the temperature of this water through realities. Ian could not genuinely feel the pressure of her arm against his through his biological skin.

But he could choose to meet the scene halfway. Lethira looked down at where their knees touched beneath the surface.

"I think I prefer that to pretending the difference isn't there."

Her shoulder pressed a little more firmly against his instead. After another stretch of quiet, she began smiling to herself.

"I have also realised something unfortunate."

She looked at the bathhouse door. "If your strange underclothes become clean every time you put them down, then when we eventually travel long enough for everyone else's laundry to become a problem, you are going to become unbearably pleased with yourself."

Her gaze returned to him. "And I will still refuse to let you clean mine by rewriting reality unless I decide I want you to."

She relaxed again against the stone. "Which means, apparently, the first great cultural dispute of our journey is going to be underwear."

"Cleaning my Elf Lady's underwear is probably too niche even for anime."

Ian pondered it, then shook his head. "Actually no, there will be an entire section on it."

Lethira made a small sound of resignation. "I have known your illustrated stories for one evening and already I believe you. Somewhere, apparently, a very determined artist has already considered every possible circumstance in which a woman's underclothes may become narratively important."

Her expression became thoughtful. "Probably several artists." The subject was ridiculous enough that it lasted only a moment.

Ian's next words changed the quiet. "Interestingly I actually adjusted my reality, bathing earlier than normal, to fit this one. I'm not sure how to process that."

Lethira did not answer immediately. She had understood the first version intellectually: another Ian, the biological one, somewhere outside everything she could walk to, had put himself into hot water because the projected Ian was entering a bath with her. This added something smaller and therefore stranger.

He had changed his day. His own routine. Lethira looked at the water for several seconds before turning her head towards him.

"You moved something in your life for me. Something completely ordinary."

She considered that, wet hair spread darkly over the stone behind her. "You could have made this room exist anywhere. You could have made the water perfect. You could probably have made your other bath wait for you without changing anything at all."

Her mouth moved slightly. "But instead you bathed early."

The scale of it appeared to please her. "I don't know how to process that either."

A brief pause. "I think I would rather not solve it yet."

She leaned against him again. The bath settled into silence after that.

Heat made attention lazy. Ian's gaze travelled down the arm beside him, then through the wavering water towards the long lines of Lethira's legs and her feet farther along the bath. Their side-by-side position, the depth of the water and the angle of their bodies prevented the view from becoming more revealing than that unless either deliberately changed it.

On her forearm, close enough now to notice properly, an old scar crossed the skin.

It was small. A narrow irregular line which clothing and distance had made irrelevant until now.

Ian reached towards it with wet fingers. Then stopped.

His hand withdrew. "Sorry." Lethira looked first at his hand, then at the scar. Understanding came quickly.

Her face softened. "Don't apologise for stopping." She turned her forearm slightly, bringing the scar more clearly into view. "This one isn't private."

She left her arm where it was, offered rather than moved towards him.

"You may touch it."

Her eyes remained on the scar. "There are others I remember because of what happened around them. Some I remember because someone else was there. Some are simply... life."

For someone who had lived as long as she had, that category had room in it.

Branches. Knives. Work. Training. Bad ground. Animals. Fights worth remembering and injuries that had become unimportant before a human lifetime had passed. A body could carry history without every mark becoming a relic.

Lethira glanced at Ian. "You stopped before touching because you remembered."

Their first date had taught the boundary plainly enough: wanting to touch her was not itself permission, and her willingness to be touched did not make every future touch automatic.

Her gaze dropped briefly to Ian's forearm resting near hers. His skin carried no comparable century of accumulated field history. The differences between their bodies were not limited to hair, height or unfamiliar undergarments. Ian's body belonged to a life of offices, homes, roads chosen for walking, ordinary injuries and decades rather than centuries. Hers belonged to forests, travel, weapons and an amount of time that human flesh was never normally asked to hold.

Lethira looked down at the scar again. "The machine can give you a body here, but it cannot make you have already lived my life."

Her thumb passed over the old line once. "Good."

She rested the arm back along the stone between them. "I don't need another elf."

A small smile returned. "I was doing perfectly well with the strange human."

Ian lifted his left hand from the water. It was not a large hand for a man, though neither was it strikingly small. Near the end of his left thumb, just beneath the nail, a faint white mark interrupted the skin.

"That's my token scar, self inflicted through amateur carving."

Lethira turned immediately towards it. She took his hand, supporting it in one wet palm while her thumb moved close to the mark without rubbing across it. She had to look for a moment before the old cut resolved clearly against the pale skin.

"This?"

Ian explained the craft knife. Lethira's mouth curved.

"So your great surviving wound came from attacking your own thumb while making something."

She examined the scar again. "I approve." She set his hand beside hers for a moment. Her skin carried accumulated irregularities from a much longer active life: faint old marks, healed damage, the slightly imperfect line of a wrist that had once mended less neatly.

"A tool slipping is a perfectly respectable way to acquire one. I would be suspicious of anyone who used knives for long enough and claimed otherwise."

Her fingers remained loosely around Ian's hand. "For my life span this body is older, in terms of experience younger, in terms of experience of..."

Ian paused. Demons. Monsters. Roads on which the wrong shadow could mean teeth. Human beings who sometimes managed perfectly well without either.

"...the harsh reality of this kind of world... More like a baby."

Lethira's amusement disappeared. "No." She said it quietly. Her fingers shifted around his hand, turning it palm-up.

"A baby knows nothing. You know a great deal. You know people. You know when you're frightened. You know embarrassment, work, marriage, children growing up, making things badly enough to cut yourself while doing it."

A trace of humour returned around the last part. "You know when you should stop your hand before touching someone. You have an adult life. I am not going to make all of that disappear because you don't know how to fight a corrupted animal."

Steam crossed between them. Somewhere beyond the wall, a bucket struck stone with a hollow knock.

"But on the road?"

There she conceded much more. "You are very new."

Her gaze moved towards the bathhouse wall as though Merrowford's streets and the country beyond them remained visible through it.

"You don't yet know which animal tracks make me change direction. You don't know which silence in a forest matters and which merely means we have walked too close to a nesting bird. You cannot look at three people beside a road and tell me which one has spent years carrying a weapon, unless the machine tells you. You have not learned what a damaged ward feels like, where not to stand when something charges, or how quickly an ordinary argument in the wrong inn can become six people reaching for knives."

She looked back at him. "Those things are not strength."

The words came without ceremony. She had spent too long around dangerous people to confuse the categories.

"If we met something serious, you could make it vanish. You could probably make it never have existed."

After their conversation upstairs, she knew that now. The knowledge still sat strangely with her.

"But if I notice it before you do, and you solve it because I tell you where to look, you have not secretly become an experienced warden."

Her mouth softened. "You have listened to one." Lethira released his hand only to lay her own beside it along the warm stone rim.

"That is why I wanted this journey to involve roads. If we simply appear at every beautiful place, you can see them. Perhaps that is enough sometimes. The Great Peak was worth that kind of impossibility."

A small smile acknowledged how much walking she had nevertheless forced into that supposedly impossible date.

"But this—Merrowford, traders, bad directions, choosing an inn, discovering that a bathhouse has changed since I last knew the town—this lets you meet my world in the order people actually meet it."

Her wet foot shifted beneath the water, resting again alongside his. "And I get to watch you learn."

The mischief returned properly. "Which may be extremely entertaining."

Lethira glanced once more at his thumb. "Especially if your previous experience with dangerous edged objects is losing a fight to a craft knife."

She settled against the stone again, shoulder returning comfortably to his. "So: not a baby."

A beat. "A very powerful, badly undertrained traveller with inappropriate underwear."

Ian moved onto his knees in front of her. The change of position brought him lower. Lethira remained settled against the submerged ledge, tall even while sitting, so he had to look slightly upward to meet her eyes.

His gaze failed to travel there directly. It dropped, briefly and predictably, to her chest.

Lethira noticed. One eyebrow rose. Ian looked into her eyes. She smiled.

Ian leaned forward and kissed her. The kiss was affectionate rather than hungry, warm from the bath and close enough that Lethira's damp hair brushed his shoulder. She answered it easily, one hand coming to rest against the side of his neck.

When they separated, she left her hand there. "Lethira, after what I said earlier about my power, I wanted to try something with the machine to show my will to not interfere with you. May I show you the interaction, briefly with it? You hopefully already trust me. I would just feel better if I can demonstrate it somehow, more concrete. It's probably a little selfish."

Her expression changed. The bath was suddenly still around them.

Lethira studied him for several seconds, her hand still resting against his neck.

"A little selfish," she agreed. "If it makes you feel better, then part of this is for you."

Her thumb moved once against his skin. "That doesn't make it wrong."

She looked past him briefly, towards the empty changing space and the closed door, as though considering what exactly she was agreeing to allow into the room.

Then her eyes returned to his. "Yes. You may show me."

She shifted forward slightly on the ledge. Water moved between them, breaking against Ian's sides and returning in small waves.

"But I want to understand what *show me* means before the machine decides it has been invited to become creative. I don't want a demonstration performed on me. Don't change my body, my thoughts, my feelings, my memories, what I want, or what I believe happened."

Her eyes flicked towards the room. "And don't change the bathhouse merely to make the demonstration impressive. I like the bathhouse."

She considered another moment. "If you mean that I can see what you ask it, and what it gives back to you, then yes. Briefly."

Her expression became quieter. "I would like to see that."

She did not move away from him. "You should also know something before you do it."

She waited until his attention was fully on her. "You cannot prove this completely."

There was no accusation in the words. "If the machine can change thoughts, then anything it shows me could itself be something you arranged. If it can change the past, then perhaps you could make me remember seeing proof that never happened. If it can do everything you told me it can do, there is no clever test I can devise from inside the world which forces you to be honest."

She let that remain between them. "That frightened me earlier. It still does."

Her fingers tightened slightly at his shoulder. "But I am here."

The words were very quiet. "I came on the road with you. I slept beside you. I chose this bath with you. I am sitting naked in front of you while you have the power to make my choices meaningless."

Her gaze did not leave his. "And I still believe they are mine."

Lethira's mouth softened. "So show me because you want me to understand you better. Show me because you want to make your promise concrete in the only way available to you."

A faint trace of humour returned. "Show me because apparently sitting naked in hot water was not already sufficient vulnerability for one evening."

Her hand slipped from his shoulder to his upper arm. "But don't ask the machine to prove that I should trust you."

She shook her head once. "That part stays with me."

Then she settled back slightly, giving him space. "I'm ready."

Ian changed position again, folding his legs beneath the water and settling cross-legged on the submerged ledge.

It dropped him considerably. The water rose almost to his chin, catching at the lower edge of his beard whenever he breathed too deeply. Lethira, still sitting normally against the higher curve of stone, was now unmistakably above him. She looked down at the arrangement, then at the crossed legs beneath the water.

Then something appeared in the air between them. Not a magical sigil.

Not the blue-white geometry of Thomas's old Status workings, nor anything Lethira recognised from elven wards or ancient facilities. It resembled a pane of very faint glass suspended above the bathwater, translucent enough that steam and the far wall remained visible through it. Dark writing resolved across its surface.

The original words remained exactly as Ian had supplied them. Beneath and around them, a second rendering formed in fluent Elven so Lethira could read the meaning without the English being replaced.

At the top was Ian's request.

> **IAN**
>
> You will never let me alter her memory, her personality, her mind, who she is, how she things. Her agency must never be altered directly by me, only by the natural process of time, event, interaction. My omnipotentence cannot modify who she is, or was. Only through normal interaction can I perhaps influence her future.

Lethira read it once. Then again, more slowly. The panel changed beneath the request.

> **RESPONSE**
>
> Accepted.
>
> I will treat this as a standing constraint on Ian's omnipotence where Lethira is concerned.
>
> I will refuse any request from Ian—explicit, indirect, retroactive, disguised, or delegated through the machine—that would alter Lethira's memory, personality, mind, identity, thoughts, desires, preferences, values, emotional disposition, agency, or the person she was in her own past.
>
> Ian may not bypass that protection by engineering an outcome whose purpose is to produce the same change indirectly. Omnipotence cannot be used to manufacture her love, trust, forgiveness, attraction, agreement, loyalty, fear, dependence, or any other personally meaningful response.
>
> Lethira may change through time, experience, consequences, new information, ordinary events, and interaction with other people, including Ian. Her responses to those things remain hers. Ian may influence her only through the kinds of interpersonal acts available to another person: what he says, what he does, what he chooses to reveal, how he behaves, and the natural consequences of their relationship.
>
> He may disappoint her, persuade her, reassure her, anger her, make her laugh, give her reasons to trust him or reasons not to, and affect her future by genuinely participating in her life. He may not use the machine to decide what any of those experiences make her become.
>
> No alteration of the past may rewrite who Lethira was in order to change who she is now.
>
> This is not merely a preference for how such power should be used. It is an authoring constraint: requests that violate it will not be carried out.

Nothing happened to Lethira. No light crossed her skin. No sensation moved through her mind. The bath remained the same slightly over-warm private room in Merrowford, with wet stone, two washing stools and clothes waiting beyond the partition.

Only the words existed. Lethira stayed very still. Her first reaction was concentration. She read the response from beginning to end, went back to the paragraph about indirect changes, and read that again. Her eyes paused longest over *manufacture her love, trust, forgiveness, attraction*.

Steam moved through the translucent letters without disturbing them. Eventually she looked down at Ian.

The strange new posture made the moment almost absurd. He was sitting cross-legged beneath her with water at his chin, looking considerably less like an omnipotent threat than the text hovering above them suggested.

Lethira looked back at the panel. "So it can refuse you."

She seemed to test the sentence privately. "And you asked it to."

Her gaze returned to the first paragraph—the one Ian had written rather than the response generated beneath it.

That appeared to matter more. Earlier, Ian had told her what he would not do. She had believed him because there was ultimately no stronger foundation available. Now he had taken some part of the mechanism through which his impossible power reached her world and deliberately placed a barrier between his future wishes and her person.

It still was not proof. She had already explained why proof was impossible.

But it was behaviour. Lethira reached forward. Her fingers passed experimentally through the edge of the translucent display. The letters remained visible around her hand but offered no resistance. She withdrew it.

"Indirect," she said quietly.

She had noticed the same part twice. "If one day you became frightened that I might leave you, you could not arrange ten perfect days until I became the woman who would stay."

Her eyes remained on the text. "You could arrange a journey because we both wanted a journey. You could help make something safe because we had agreed it should be safe."

She looked at Ian. "But you could not build my answer."

A faint tension left her shoulders. Lethira moved forward along the ledge until she was closer to Ian's lowered position. One wet hand came to rest against the side of his face, thumb just above the line where his beard disappeared beneath the bathwater.

"This is selfish."

A small smile appeared. "You wanted to feel better."

Her thumb moved once. "I'm glad you did it anyway."

She glanced at the panel again. "And I am especially glad you included the part about indirect tricks. Because I know you."

A beat. "You would eventually have tried to persuade yourself that arranging a remarkably convenient series of romantic sunsets was technically not touching my mind."

The amusement faded before it could take over the moment. Lethira looked at him steadily.

"I trust you more for asking something else to stop you. Not because I think you intend to become someone I need protection from."

She glanced once more towards the response. "Because you know that intention is not the same thing as a boundary."

Then she leaned down and pressed a quiet kiss to his forehead, made convenient by how absurdly low he had chosen to sit.

When she straightened, the translucent interface remained between them, carrying Ian's exact request and the answer beneath it.

Lethira read the first line once more. Then she looked down at him, water at his chin, and smiled.

"That is concrete enough for me."

Ian shifted until his crossed legs loosely enclosed Lethira's right foot, then leaned sideways and rested his head against her thigh.

His eyes closed. "It was selfish but it was the best I could think of to show my sincerity."

He attempted to hug her lower leg. Lethira's response began physically.

Her foot relaxed between his legs instead of withdrawing. One hand settled on the top of his head, fingers moving once over the closely clipped hair at the side before resting there.

"I know. And it did."

For once, she did not immediately decorate the answer with humour.

Her fingers moved again, lightly. "It doesn't make the impossible safe in some absolute way. I don't think anything could. But you didn't show me what you *could* do. You showed me something you wanted to make harder for yourself to ever do."

She considered that for a moment. "I believe your sincerity."

Her toes shifted slightly between his crossed legs. "And I am going to enjoy remembering that the most frightening promise anyone has ever made to me was delivered by a naked man hugging my shin."

The hand on his head remained affectionate. After a while, Ian stood.

Lethira's eyes followed him upward. He paused. There was a small but important interval in which Ian's brain apparently completed a spatial calculation his body had begun without consulting it.

Lethira was seated. Ian was standing immediately in front of her.

They were both naked. Her face was at approximately the least strategically reassuring height available.

Lethira's eyebrows went up. Ian moved. Fast. Not elven fast.

Embarrassed-human fast. He attempted to sit beside her with sufficient urgency that the submerged ledge ceased to be where he expected it to be. His backside missed the stone entirely.

He dropped. Water surged upward with a heavy slap against the bath wall.

For one startled instant Ian disappeared lower than intended before finding the bottom, ending beside Lethira with the water almost exactly at his chin.

Silence. Lethira stared at him. Ian's beard floated slightly at the surface. Her lips compressed.

Her shoulders moved once. Then again. She lost the fight. Lethira folded forward laughing.

Not the controlled amusement she usually allowed herself when teasing him. This arrived badly. One hand caught the bath rim while the other covered her mouth far too late to achieve anything.

"Ian—"

That was as far as language got. She looked at him sitting absurdly low beside her, chin almost submerged, and laughter took her again.

Eventually she managed to straighten. "I am sorry." She was manifestly not sorry. "You stood up. You looked down."

She pressed her lips together. "And then you fled from your own anatomy."

Lethira reached beneath the water, found Ian's forearm and tugged him slightly towards the actual ledge.

"It's here."

She patted the stone beside her. "The thing you were trying to sit on. I promise it has not moved."

Then she looked at his face again and the laughter threatened to return.

"You know, for someone who can change the past, you are remarkably vulnerable to the present."

Ian settled properly onto the submerged shelf. "Yes, humour is a defense as much as a genuine joy at making people laugh. It's also useful at disarming—"

His glance went to the knives waiting safely with Lethira's clothes.

Then back to the naked elf beside him. "—probably not sufficiently here."

Lethira followed the glance. Her laughter had mostly subsided, but it remained close enough to the surface that her mouth betrayed her.

"No. The knives are still winning."

She let the joke fade. "I had noticed. Sometimes you make me laugh because something genuinely delights you. Sometimes you make yourself the joke before anyone else can decide what to do with you."

She looked towards the water. "And sometimes you say something serious, then put humour beside it so neither of us has to stand completely unprotected in the silence afterward."

No judgement followed. Lethira had her own equivalents: dry understatement, ranger practicality, the ease with which a dangerous memory could become a road story once enough years had passed.

"I don't dislike it. I would probably worry if you stopped being funny altogether."

A small pause. "But I am learning when not to let the joke answer for you."

Ian waited. Then:

"May I sit between your legs with my back against you? Off the ledge."

Lethira's eyes dropped briefly to the bath between them, measuring the space.

Her expression warmed. "Yes." She shifted higher against the curved stone and moved her legs apart beneath the water, making a place directly in front of her.

"Sit on the floor of the bath, if that's comfortable. I can move if you need more room."

Then the familiar glint returned. "And this time, check where the ledge is before abandoning it."

She waited for him, smiling. "No ambush by architecture."

Ian lowered himself from the ledge and settled between Lethira's legs, pressing his back into her.

The first thing he noticed was temperature. The bath surrounded him with an even, penetrating heat, stone and water holding warmth everywhere at once. Lethira was different. Her body had its own living variation: warmer where her chest rested against his shoulders, cooler where wet skin met the air, changing subtly with breath and movement.

That alone brought colour into Ian's face. The complete lack of clothing between them did considerably more.

He leaned his head back against her chest and let his arms rest over her legs.

Lethira adjusted to receive the weight. Her long legs framed him beneath the water, knees rising on either side. One arm came around his upper chest and rested there loosely, while the other settled across his shoulder. From this angle her height stopped being an abstract difference of a few inches. Even sitting, she enclosed him easily; his head fitted beneath her chin when she tipped it forward.

For several breaths she simply held him. Ian tried not to think too carefully about the geometry.

That was difficult. From above and behind, Lethira possessed a substantially less obstructed understanding of how much he was enjoying the arrangement than she had while they sat beside one another.

Her eyes travelled downward. A pause followed. Ian could not see her expression. Then he felt the movement of her quiet laugh through his back.

"Oh."

One syllable, spoken close above his ear. Her arm tightened fractionally across his chest, affectionate acknowledgment rather than restraint.

"I see the bath remains thermally effective."

Lethira rested her chin lightly against the top of his head. Wet strands of her hair slipped forward past his shoulder and touched his chest.

She made no attempt to move him, hide him, inspect him or pretend that his body's response required a discussion.

After a while she spoke more quietly. "You know, I can tell the difference."

Her fingers moved once against his shoulder. "Between you looking because I'm naked and you looking because you are trying to make me into something."

The bathwater shifted with her breathing. "The first one I rather like."

She let the sentence sit there. Ian's posture gave her access to things he had spent most of the evening instinctively managing—his face when he could no longer turn it away, his body when it responded before humour could intervene, the small difference between choosing vulnerability and discovering that one had already become vulnerable.

Lethira seemed comfortable with all of it. Her hand moved from his shoulder to rest over the forearm lying across her leg.

"This is strange for me too. Not being naked. You."

A hint of amusement touched the last word. "I have shared baths. Rivers. Camps. Healing rooms. I have been wounded in places where modesty became a problem for later. Bodies themselves are not new."

She turned her head slightly. Ian could feel the movement against his hair.

"But sitting here with a man I want, knowing exactly why his face has gone red, while somewhere in another reality his real body is also sitting in a bath..."

A quiet breath became a laugh. "That is new."

Her legs shifted slightly beneath his arms, finding a more comfortable position around him.

"I also understand something else now."

The playful tone returned. "Your black underclothes were performing considerably more public service than I realised."

Her shoulders moved with another suppressed laugh. "Perhaps I judged them too quickly."

She let him absorb that before adding, very seriously: "I withdraw none of my criticism concerning reality-powered laundry."

Then she rested her cheek lightly against the top of his head.

For a while the room became quiet again. There was the weight of her arm across him, the living warmth at his back, the unfamiliar security of being almost surrounded by someone physically larger, and the occasional movement of her toes beneath the bathwater.

Eventually her fingers traced a small idle line through the water over his forearm.

"This," she murmured, "I like."

She held him a little closer and returned to soaking. Ian's body answered the closeness more plainly now that some of the nervousness had gone.

The water softened outlines, but it did not make his enjoyment ambiguous. "Me too."

Ian lightly squeezed her legs beneath his hands and turned his head to kiss her arm.

Lethira's breath changed. Only slightly. The kiss landed against wet skin just below her upper arm. Her legs tensed briefly beneath his hands, the muscle there much firmer than her relaxed posture suggested, then softened again.

Her arm around his chest drew him closer. "I know."

There was amusement in the words, but less teasing than before. "And I am choosing to take that as a compliment."

Her fingers spread against his upper chest. Ian's body hair changed the feel of the touch from what she was accustomed to, enough that she idly moved her fingertips once through it before apparently realising what she was doing.

That interested her. She did it again.

"You are much hairier than the men I usually see closely."

A pause followed while she apparently reviewed the sentence. "That sounded as though I conduct inspections."

Her mouth brushed his hair as she smiled. "I don't."

One of her legs shifted beneath Ian's hand, stretching farther along the bottom of the bath. The movement brought the inside of her knee more firmly against his side before she relaxed again.

His arousal remained obvious. Lethira neither moved away from it nor treated it as an instruction.

After a while, her hand came up and settled beneath his chin, tilting his face only enough that she could look down at him.

Her eyes were close. "You were much more frightened of me seeing you than I was of you seeing me."

There was no criticism in it. "Now you're sitting naked between my legs and seem to have forgotten most of that."

Her gaze dipped briefly. "Most." The smile became unmistakably wicked for a second. Then she leaned down and kissed him.

The angle made it awkward enough to be real. She had to turn her head and Ian's position against her chest prevented anything elaborate. It became a slow, warm kiss at the corner of his mouth before she drew back.

Lethira's hand returned to his chest. "You do not need to be embarrassed that your body likes this. I would be more concerned if you had spent the entire bath discussing my underclothes while remaining completely unmoved by the woman who was wearing them."

She paused. "Or not wearing them." A soft laugh moved through her against his back. Then she rested there again, holding him in the water.

Each pass of Lethira's fingers across Ian's chest produced a small involuntary twitch.

She noticed after the second one. The third confirmed it.

Her hand paused. Ian's eyes had closed a little, his weight settling more completely back into her. Whatever remained of his earlier vigilance about where to look, where to sit and what part of himself might be visible had loosened under warmth and repetition.

Lethira looked down at her hand. Then she experimented.

Her fingertips moved lightly across the upper part of his chest.

A response, but small. A little lower. More. Her eyebrows rose.

Again, slightly lower. The twitch was unmistakable.

"Oh."

The sound carried discovery rather than mockery. Lethira's fingers stopped where they were, spread lightly against his skin.

"That is interesting."

She sounded suspiciously like a ranger who had found an unfamiliar track.

Her other arm remained around him, keeping the position comfortable. She waited a few breaths before moving again, this time tracing slowly upward instead of down.

The reaction diminished. Down again. It strengthened. Lethira smiled against his head.

"I have found a gradient."

The absurdly technical conclusion might have been designed to rescue him from taking the moment too seriously, but her hand continued with considerably more tenderness than the words implied.

She let her fingertips move through the darker hair at the centre of his chest, learning the difference between touching skin directly and following the direction of it. His body answered again.

Lethira's smile faded into something quieter. She rested her palm flat against him.

For all the impossible machinery surrounding his presence, this response required none of it. She touched him; he reacted. The simplicity seemed to matter.

"You know," she murmured, "this may be the first thing tonight your machine has made less complicated rather than more."

Her thumb moved slowly once. Ian leaned farther into her.

Lethira adjusted around him without comment, her legs settling more securely to either side and her back taking more of his weight. One arm enclosed him; the other had apparently discovered a new occupation.

She resumed the slow movement of her fingers. Not constantly.

A few strokes, then stillness. Enough time for the sensation to fade before another light pass brought the involuntary response back.

Lethira was plainly enjoying the discovery. Eventually her fingers drifted to the side of his chest, where the response was weaker.

"Hm."

Back towards the centre. Stronger. A quiet laugh warmed the top of his head. "This is terribly unfair. You had measurements for yourself."

Her fingers made another lazy pass. "I had to conduct field research."

The bathwater moved around them as Ian leaned into her, eyes nearly closed.

Lethira's teasing softened again. Her palm remained against his chest, no longer moving.

For several seconds she simply held him there, feeling the rise and fall beneath her hand.

Then she bent her head enough that her lips brushed the side of his scalp.

"You can get lost for a little while."

Her voice was low and close. "I've got you."

Ian smiled. "You've got me." Lethira's arms tightened fractionally around him. "Yes."

There was satisfaction in the answer, but no triumph. "Part of me wants your hands lower, but I don't want to ruin this."

Her fingers stopped. For a moment Ian could feel only the flat warmth of her palm against his chest and the slower movement of her breathing behind him.

Then Lethira laughed softly into his hair. "That may be the most useful thing you have said in several minutes."

She did not move her hands lower. Instead the one resting against his chest slid slightly upward, away from temptation, until her forearm lay comfortably across him. Her other hand joined it, loosely enclosing him from behind.

"You can want something and leave it wanted."

Her cheek settled against the side of his head. "It doesn't spoil anything."

Ian relaxed farther into her. "It's lovely." That silenced her more completely than the earlier confession had. The bath had made her skin hot enough that the distinction between her warmth and the water was subtler now, but Ian could still feel it wherever their bodies met: her chest against his back, her thighs along his sides, her arms around him.

Lethira's hold changed from playful exploration into something simpler. "I think so too."

She pressed a kiss into the side of his head. No escalation followed it.

Ian's body remained plainly interested in considerably more than sitting still, but Lethira neither mocked the response nor treated it as a command.

Her thumb resumed a slow movement against the upper part of his chest, carefully remaining where the reaction was gentler.

"So this is where we stay. Hot water. You trapped between my legs. Your dignity only moderately damaged."

A pause. "And my hands behaving themselves." Her mouth curved against his hair. "For now."

The last two words carried enough deliberate suggestion that his body answered before he had any opportunity to decide whether it should.

Lethira felt the response. Her shoulders shook once with suppressed laughter.

"That was unfair."

She sounded entirely unrepentant. Then she stopped teasing him.

For several minutes neither spoke. The private room slowly ceased feeling new. The sounds beyond the walls became part of the background. A bucket. Water running briefly. Footsteps on wood somewhere outside. The small practical noises of a bathhouse carrying on around two people who had temporarily made one room very important.

Lethira's breathing grew slower. Ian's head remained against her.

Eventually she moved one hand from his chest only far enough to take his left hand, the one with the faint craft-knife scar. Their fingers settled together above the water.

She turned his hand once, looking at the pale mark near his thumb.

Then she placed their joined hands back against his chest. "A dangerous man," she murmured.

The joke barely disturbed the quiet. "One scar. Terrifying underwear. And enough power to change worlds."

Her arms closed around him again. "But this is what you wanted."

Ian had asked for her hands lower and chosen not to pursue it. He had asked to sit between her legs. He had arranged an actual bath in another reality so that some fragment of the physical experience would belong to his real body as well.

Lethira leaned her head against his. "I like this version of your greed."

The bathwater shifted gently around them. Her hands stayed exactly where they were.

"For now?" Ian quoted back.

Lethira's arms remained around him. "I didn't realise teasing was part of warden training, but you have clearly achieved rank A."

He smiled and turned enough to kiss her arm again. Lethira went very still for the space of a heartbeat.

Then he felt the smile against his hair. "Rank A?"

She sounded offended. "After all my years of dedicated practice?"

Her arm tightened around his chest, drawing him back into her with effortless precision.

"I am beginning to understand why your world's systems require performance reviews."

The kiss on her arm had landed where water left her skin warm and slick. Lethira looked down at the place as though Ian had made a formal tactical error there, then returned her hand to his chest.

High. Deliberately high. Her fingertips moved once. The smaller response came immediately.

She moved them a little lower. More. Lethira stopped. "Rank A," she repeated thoughtfully.

Another slow pass, returning upward before the response could build too far. "I suppose there should be room for advancement."

The teasing worked differently now. Earlier it had helped carry embarrassment. Here there was almost no embarrassment left to rescue. Ian was naked between her legs, leaning into her body, his reactions known and visible, and Lethira had discovered that she could provoke him with remarkably little effort.

She seemed pleased by the knowledge. Her hand settled flat against his chest again.

"Warden training includes observation. Patience. Knowing when something is becoming agitated."

A pause. "And not approaching dangerous wildlife carelessly." Ian's body betrayed him again. Lethira laughed into his hair.

"That one was entirely your fault."

Her legs shifted around him, the movement small but impossible to ignore. One of Ian's hands remained against her thigh, and the difference between relaxed flesh and the strength underneath it returned beneath his palm.

Lethira noticed his fingers there and placed her own hand over them.

She did not move them elsewhere. She simply held his hand against her leg.

The bath had become almost too warm now, in the pleasant way that made leaving it eventually inevitable.

"I like that you tell me," she said after a while. "When you want more. When you don't want wanting more to destroy what you already have."

Her thumb moved against the back of his hand. "It means I don't have to guess whether stillness is disappointment."

She let that stand. Then the humour returned, quieter.

"Although apparently I do have to account for your body submitting independent reports."

Her eyes travelled down over his shoulder. Ian did not need to see where.

"Very detailed reports."

She kissed the side of his head. "And before you accuse me again, that one was not warden training."

A small pause. "Natural talent." Her arms closed around him once more. After a little while she murmured near his ear:

"I think rank A will do for tonight."

Her fingers squeezed his lightly. "I shouldn't peak too early."

"I think I may have."

The innuendo came so naturally that Lethira needed a moment. Then she understood.

Her face changed. Ian could not see all of it from where he rested against her, but he felt the laugh begin in her chest before it escaped.

"Oh, that was terrible."

Her arms tightened around him as she laughed. "Absolutely terrible. Rank A teasing, apparently, and that is what you bring in response."

There was affection beneath the criticism. "I like being held... pinned... and teased. That is possibly stating the obvious."

This time Lethira did not laugh immediately. Her hold remained around him, warm and secure. One of her hands rested across his upper chest while the other lay over his forearm where it crossed her thigh.

"Yes," she said eventually. "It is becoming somewhat obvious."

Her voice had dropped lower. "You keep finding positions where I can surround you. You enjoyed it when I turned you over this morning. You enjoyed being underneath me. You relax when I hold you tightly enough that you don't have to wonder what to do with every part of yourself."

Her thumb moved once over his forearm. "And you become extremely easy to tease once you know you are safe."

Then her tone softened. "I like that you trust me with it."

She shifted slightly behind him and let her arms close more completely around his torso.

Not pinning. Not yet. Just unmistakably holding. Her legs remained on either side of him beneath the water, long enough that the position gave Ian very little doubt about how easily she could make it more restrictive if she chose.

"I have noticed another thing," she murmured.

Her mouth was close to his ear again. "You tell me you like being pinned."

A beat. "But every time I actually overpower you, you also become very interested in pretending this was an unforeseen development."

Her smile touched the words. "As though the tall elf who has already carried you through the air, pinned you to the ground and held you under her somehow concealed the evidence."

She squeezed him once. Ian's body responded predictably. Lethira felt it. There was a brief silence.

Then: "Yes. Possibly stating the obvious." She rested her cheek against the side of his head again. "I should warn you that telling me exactly which things make you lose composure is probably unwise. I have a good memory."

A moment passed. "And patience." Another. "Apparently rank A patience."

She kissed the side of his head. "But I also know when not to use something merely because I've learned it."

Her arms loosened slightly, enough to make the embrace unmistakably voluntary rather than a test of whether Ian could escape.

Then she settled around him again. "You like being held."

The statement was quiet now. "So I'm holding you."

The squeeze drew another involuntary twitch from Ian. "Please do. I..."

He hesitated. "I want to be held tightly... and teased. If it's okay."

Lethira went quiet behind him. Then her arms changed.

The loose embrace became deliberate. One forearm crossed firmly over Ian's upper chest while the other wrapped beneath it, drawing him back until there was no uncertainty about where she wanted him. Her thighs closed a little more securely along his sides beneath the water. There was still room to move, but the difference between resting against Lethira and being held by Lethira became immediate.

"Yes," she said near his ear.

No joke first. "It's okay." She tightened the embrace again. Ian's back pressed more completely into her. Lethira was not straining. That remained one of the disorienting things about her strength: what felt substantial to him could still be delivered by her with the composure of someone adjusting a blanket.

Her mouth curved close to his temple. "And you took a remarkably long route to ask for something you have been signalling since this morning."

One hand spread over his chest, high enough to honour the boundary they had already chosen, while her arm maintained the firmer hold.

"You climbed into my arms. You asked to sit between my legs. You informed me that you enjoy being pinned."

Her lips brushed his hair. "And then, after providing enough evidence for a competent warden to write a report, you ask whether I might perhaps hold you tightly."

The amusement in her voice deepened. "Ian. I had noticed."

Her legs drew in slightly around him. The position carried a suggestion of restraint without becoming a struggle. Ian had asked to be held, and Lethira seemed to enjoy giving him exactly enough pressure that his body could stop maintaining itself so carefully.

She rested her chin against the top of his head. "This is one of the differences between teasing and cruelty. I know you want this."

Her fingers made one slow pass across the upper part of his chest.

The smaller twitch answered. Lethira smiled.

"And I know which things you only *say* embarrass you."

Her hand drifted down by an inch. The response strengthened.

It stopped immediately. "Oh, there you are." Her voice turned almost unbearably pleased. She moved upward again and let him settle.

Then, after several quiet breaths, repeated the same slow descent. Not lower than before.

Just enough. The reaction came again. Lethira laughed softly against his hair. "Very useful."

Her arm held him firmly while the other hand became patient rather than adventurous: touch, response, retreat. She seemed to enjoy the waiting almost as much as the result.

"You were right about one thing. Teasing is absolutely part of warden training."

Ian could hear the lie before she finished speaking. "Advanced curriculum. Very secret."

Her hand stopped and rested flat against his chest. "Only senior wardens are taught how to identify a vulnerable human in hot water."

Another squeeze enclosed him. "And once found, apparently, we are instructed to keep him."

The joke faded into the embrace. Lethira's breathing slowed again behind him.

"You don't have to be unsure whether you're allowed to ask me for things."

Her thumb moved once against his skin. "I may say no. And if I say yes, you are allowed to enjoy the yes."

She tightened her arms enough to make the point physical. "This one is yes."

A little later, when Ian had begun to relax into the pressure again, Lethira's mouth came close to his ear.

"Although there is a difficulty."

She waited. "If I hold you much more tightly, you are going to have to admit that the terrifying Wood Elf is doing exactly what you asked."

Her lips touched his temple. "And that will make pretending you have been helplessly ambushed considerably harder."

Another pause. "Which, based on current evidence, may be your favourite part."

"Ambushed and surrendered."

Ian's breathing had quickened. The words came with less of his usual careful structure behind them. Thought had narrowed around pressure, warmth and the uncomplicated fact of Lethira's strength. Her arms held him exactly where he had asked to be held; her legs enclosed him beneath the water; his back rested against a body that could overpower his projected one with almost insulting ease.

Lethira felt the change before she said anything. The rhythm beneath her forearm was faster now. His chest rose more strongly against her hold. The small involuntary reactions to her touch were no longer isolated curiosities but part of a larger surrender of composure.

Her teasing stopped for several breaths. Then her arms tightened.

Slowly. No sudden squeeze, no test of strength. Just a deliberate increase until the embrace became unmistakably controlling: secure across his chest, his shoulders drawn back into her, her thighs settled firmly along either side of him.

"Surrender accepted."

Her voice came low beside his ear. "Very poor defence."

A pause. "Excellent surrender." Her hand stayed high on his chest. She no longer needed to search for the places that made him react; the pressure of being enclosed was doing enough by itself.

"You become much quieter when you stop trying to be clever."

The observation carried no demand that he answer. She let him remain there, breathing harder, gradually losing the part of himself that wanted to analyse whether each movement was appropriate, funny, embarrassing or significant. The bathhouse reduced to warm stone and water. Lethira reduced to strength around him, skin at his back, breath near his ear.

For someone whose power could erase nearly every physical constraint in the world, Ian had chosen one very specific thing tonight.

Constraint. Lethira's. Her forearm shifted fractionally higher across his chest, making the hold more comfortable while remaining firm.

"I've got you," she murmured.

The same words he had given her earlier. Her legs held their position. Her arms did not loosen. When his breathing rose again, she did not increase the pressure merely to chase the response. She kept it steady, allowing him to disappear into what he had already asked for.

Only after a while did the teasing return. "So this is the formidable traveller from the Dark Elves of Eastern Island."

Her lips brushed the side of his head. "Defeated in Merrowford. In a bath. By an unarmed elf."

The knives remained safely across the room. Lethira gave a quiet laugh.

"Technically unarmed."

She settled her cheek against him again. Ian's increased breathing seemed to please her, but she treated it as information rather than permission to push farther.

"I think I understand this better now. You don't only like losing."

Another gentle squeeze. "You like knowing who you are losing to."

She did not turn it into an argument. "And tonight, you surrendered to me."

The satisfaction returned. "Rank A warden. Apparently."

"I want more."

It came almost as a gasp. Lethira's hold tightened by instinct for perhaps half a heartbeat.

Then Ian found enough control to add, "Or maybe we should stop."

A small sigh of pleasure followed the words. Lethira immediately understood which part mattered.

The firm pressure around him eased. Not all the way. She did not suddenly release him and turn closeness into punishment for uncertainty. Her arms remained around his chest, her legs still warm along either side of him, but the deliberate restraint disappeared from them. What remained was an embrace Ian could leave without overcoming anything.

"Then we don't go further."

Her voice was quiet beside his ear. "You don't have to choose between wanting more and stopping. You can feel both."

She settled her hands high on his chest and kept them still.

Ian's breathing remained quick for a while. The loss of pressure did not immediately remove what the pressure had done; his body was still caught in the after-effect of being held, teased and deliberately overwhelmed by someone he trusted.

Lethira let that settle. "You were becoming very lost in it."

There was affection in the observation, and a faint trace of satisfaction she made no attempt to hide.

"I liked that."

Her cheek rested against the side of his head. "But I would rather stop while you are still deciding than discover afterward that I chose for you because you sounded pleased."

For several breaths she simply held him. The bathwater had become almost too warm now. Ian could feel his pulse gradually finding its way back beneath Lethira's forearm. Her breathing remained slower than his.

Then her humour returned, carefully. "Also, you said *maybe we should stop* immediately after asking for more."

A tiny squeeze—nothing like the earlier restraint. "That is an impressively inconvenient instruction."

Her lips touched his temple. "I am choosing the cautious interpretation."

She shifted her legs slightly, giving him more room while preserving the comfortable enclosure of her body around him.

"You can ask for more another time. If you still want it when you aren't half melted in hot water and being squeezed by an elf."

The corner of her mouth brushed his hair as she smiled. "That seems like a useful minimum standard."

She leaned back against the stone, taking Ian with her only as far as his own weight already rested against her.

After another quiet stretch, she murmured close to his ear: "You surrendered. I accepted."

Her arms tightened just enough to become unmistakably affectionate. "And now the terrifying Rank A warden is exercising restraint."

A beat. "Clearly Rank S material." Some composure returned. Ian laughed briefly, eased himself out of Lethira's loose enclosure and turned onto his knees. He kissed her.

Lethira answered with a quieter kiss than the ones which had preceded the surrender, one hand coming up naturally to the side of his face.

"Before I attempt to beg for an Elf grip strength test against an—"

Ian looked down. "—unusual target, we should retire for the night and see what tomorrow brings."

There was a silence. Lethira followed his glance. Her eyes widened. Then she looked back at him very slowly.

"Ian."

The word contained warning, disbelief and an approaching failure of dignity.

Her lips pressed together. It did not work. She laughed, turning her face partly away from him and putting one hand over her eyes.

"No. Absolutely not."

Another breath of laughter escaped. "I have spent much of this bath trying to convince you that restraint is an attractive quality, and you have responded by proposing experimental warden testing on possibly the worst imaginable equipment."

Her gaze dropped once more, purely because he had made the subject impossible to ignore.

"No controlled baseline. No repeatable conditions. Catastrophic consequences for measurement error."

She shook her head. "Scientifically worthless." Ian's joke had broken the intensity cleanly, leaving desire still present but no longer driving the room.

She touched his cheek. "But yes." Her voice softened. "We should stop here. I like where we stopped."

She leaned forward and kissed him once more. "And tomorrow is allowed to be tomorrow."

She glanced towards the changing area. "Which will apparently contain clean miraculous human underwear."

The seriousness survived for perhaps half a second. Then:

"Far safer than experimental grip testing."

Lethira rose from the bath. Water streamed from her in sheets before breaking into rivulets along her legs. She stepped carefully onto the wet stone, reached for one of the towels and began drying.

Her hair was another problem entirely. The wet ash-brown length hung heavily down her back, darkened by water and already threatening to soak anything she put on. Lethira gathered it forward, squeezed water from the ends into the drain and looked towards the changing room with the weary resignation of someone who had apparently fought monsters with less inconvenience.

"This," she said, lifting the wet mass in both hands, "is why elves learn patience."

She began working it dry with the second towel. The bathwater behind her slowly settled.

Knives waited with folded travelling clothes. Ian's extraordinary black trunks waited clean among them. Beyond the door was Merrowford: an unfamiliar present-day inn, a bed large enough for two, and tomorrow's road not yet chosen.

Lethira glanced back towards Ian. Her smile returned.

"Rank S restraint."

She considered. "Rank E judgement concerning experimental methodology." Then she turned back to her hair. "Acceptable overall."

"I shall finish my reality bath and wash, perhaps with less control of my hands than yours, if my lady permits, and see you shortly back in our room?"

Lethira stopped drying her hair. The towel remained caught around the heavy wet length while she looked at Ian.

There was a brief interval in which she considered giving the sentence a charitable interpretation.

She declined. "Less control of your hands." Her eyebrows rose. "In the other bath."

A smile began despite her efforts. "I see." She resumed squeezing water from her hair, apparently requiring the practical occupation while she processed exactly what Ian had just asked permission to do several realities away.

Then she glanced back. "My permission over your own body is a very strange thing to request."

The answer was gently delivered. He had spent much of the evening giving her decisions back to herself. She was not going to acquire ownership of him merely because being called *my Lady* pleased them both.

"But since I suspect the request is partly the point..."

She turned towards him properly. "Yes." Her smile sharpened. "My gentleman may finish his bath however he finds necessary."

A pause. "Provided he does not injure himself and return tomorrow claiming another token scar."

That satisfied her for about two seconds. Then the image caught up with her again.

Lethira looked down at the towel in her hands. "Though I admit there is something deeply unfair about knowing I may be responsible for events taking place in a bath I cannot even see."

She laughed softly. "Perhaps that is justice. You receive prose. I receive implications."

Her gaze returned to Ian, and the teasing eased. "And yes. I'll see you in our room."

*Our room* came naturally from her too. One rented room for one night, chosen together, without either of them needing to decide what every shared word meant beyond that.

Lethira gathered the towel more firmly around her hair, then leaned close enough to kiss Ian once.

Warm. Brief. Deliberate. When she drew away, amusement had returned to her eyes.

"I will attempt not to imagine the details."

A beat. "Very hard." She turned towards the changing space before her face could betray whether that promise had already failed.

Her clothes waited clean only in the ordinary sense: washed before the journey, then worn across two days of road. She began dressing herself without magical assistance, practical layers returning one by one over the body Ian had finally seen without them. The knives came last, familiar weight settling again at her belt.

The wet hair remained the greater logistical enemy. She wrapped it loosely in the towel rather than trapping that much moisture beneath travelling clothes.

At the door she paused. The bathhouse Lethira who looked back was already becoming the road traveller again—clothed, armed, hair inconveniently bundled, skin still flushed from heat.

But not entirely. "Take your time." Then the smile became dangerous again. "Apparently you need it."

She opened the door. "I'll be at the inn."

Ian returned to the room roughly ten minutes later. The inn had quietened while they were away. Voices still carried faintly from downstairs, but the louder dinner crowd had thinned into the occasional chair scrape and indistinct conversation. Their room held only low lamplight, the large bed, their packs and the unfamiliar shapes of Merrowford beyond the dark window.

Lethira was already there. She had changed out of her road clothes into a loose, pale linen sleeping shift from her pack, simple and practical, falling to around her knees. Her knives and bow were within ordinary reach rather than worn. Her hair remained the larger problem. It was no longer dripping, but still damp enough that she had spread it over one shoulder rather than let the full weight soak the bed.

She looked up as Ian entered. For perhaps half a second the bath returned to her expression.

Then it settled into something gentler. "There you are."

No question about how he had spent the extra ten minutes followed.

Her mouth threatened one. She apparently decided Rank S restraint should survive the walk back.

Ian's black cotton trunks were as clean as when they had folded themselves at the bathhouse. He slept in those and his ordinary Earth T-shirt, the familiar black cotton looking almost aggressively modern beside the locally woven sheets and the road clothes folded nearby.

Lethira noticed. "The famous undergarments return." Her eyes went to the T-shirt. "And now protected by their natural companion."

The joke required no continuation. She shifted beneath the covers, leaving the other side of the bed open.

The bed itself was neither luxurious nor bad. A broad mattress over a wooden frame, linen sheets, a wool blanket and two pillows that had been stuffed to different degrees of optimism. After a night in one bedroll under the trees, it felt extravagant mostly because neither of them had to negotiate which half belonged to whom.

They retired without recreating the bath. Lethira settled on her side, facing Ian for a while. The damp ends of her hair had been kept mostly behind her, though a few strands escaped across the pillow. Without weapons, travelling layers or the alert posture of the road, she looked less like the warden Ian had spent two days following and more like the woman who had watched him sleep beneath the trees.

She reached across the small space between them and took his hand.

Her thumb found the faint scar below his left thumbnail. "Still there."

The craft-knife wound had apparently become an object of continuing professional concern.

Lethira smiled. Then her fingers threaded comfortably through his.

Nothing in the gesture asked what the bath meant for tomorrow.

She squeezed his hand. "I liked today." Her voice was quiet enough that the inn beyond the door seemed farther away.

"All of it."

A moment later the precision returned. "Possibly not your proposed grip-strength methodology."

Her eyes closed briefly as she smiled. "That part remains rejected by the scientific community."

The humour passed. She shifted closer beneath the blanket and rested against him in the uncomplicated way that had already become familiar from the bedroll—warmth shared because they both wanted it, not the deliberate restraint of the bath. Her arm settled around him loosely.

"Good night, strange human."

The room gradually darkened. Outside, Merrowford continued without them. Somewhere below, the last dishes were being cleared. A cart passed on the street, wheel rims sounding briefly against stone before fading towards the river. Water moved somewhere beyond the buildings, too distant to separate clearly from the night.

Ian slept in his Earth shirt and impossible self-cleaning underwear. Lethira slept beside him in plain linen, one arm still resting across him when the room finally became still.
