Map Notes

This is a work-in-progress map brief, not a final atlas.

It records:

• what current canon already supports
• the best current schematic route/world map
• what is still too open to place confidently

What Canon Already Fixes

World Shape

• The world has one dominant continent divided by a continent-spanning central mountain range.
• The western side is the unstable monster/demon side.
• The eastern side contains the main human kingdoms, trade routes, and most organised civilisation.
• The Elven Woods are approximately 100 km east-west and 1000 km north-south.
• The continent's nominal map envelope is approximately 5000 km north-south by 2000 km east-west, with irregular coasts rather than a rectangular outline.
• Major extents may vary roughly +5% / -20%: approximately 4000-5250 km north-south and 1600-2100 km east-west. Inlets, peninsulas, bays, and local outliers may exceed that feature-scale variation.
• The far north narrows structurally to a 500-800 km cross-section north of Rimeholt and Crownholt; the visited northern corridor remains broader.
• world.md explicitly defines the world as Earth-sized, with an Earth-like day, year, and solar cycle.
• The story begins in the northern hemisphere, and its seasons follow familiar spring, summer, autumn, and winter behaviour.

Working Latitude / Longitude Model

These are authoring estimates, not established coordinates. They are intended to keep climate, travel direction, ecology, and future map work mutually plausible. Longitude uses the Wood Elf settlement as an arbitrary 0 degrees E/W datum; positive values are east.

Important limits:

• Earth-like includes approximately Earth-like axial tilt, but does not yet define ocean circulation, prevailing winds, or continental shape.
• Weather in a chapter reflects season, altitude, exposure, continentality, and rain shadow as well as latitude.
• Mountains and highlands can produce a much colder climate than their geographic latitude suggests; southern dryness need not imply subtropical geographic latitude.
• Overlapping ranges are deliberate. The prose supports broad climatic bands, not surveyed borders.
• Climate equivalent means the Earth latitude whose climate most resembles the prose; it is not necessarily the place's actual geographic latitude.
• Numeric land-route longitude estimates use the author-fixed standard party progress of 25 km/day under ordinary road and weather conditions, then allow for road curvature and non-east-west travel.
• At these latitudes, one degree of longitude varies substantially: about 96 km at 30 degrees N, 72 km at 50 degrees N, and 47 km at 65 degrees N.
• For normalized continental position, let W be the western coast, E the eastern coast, and L = E - W the continent's east-west land width, excluding the narrow mountain band. The central range is approximately M = W + 0.20L = E - 0.80L.
• Coast and range longitudes vary by latitude; the plotted cross-sections below show that curvature directly. No Rimeholt-to-range midpoint formula is implied.
• The nominal 2000 km width puts the overall range axis about 400 km from the western edge and 1600 km from the eastern edge. This is a whole-continent construction rule, not a required width at every latitude.
• The central range remains broadly north-south. Ordinary west/east wander is within about 100 km; a modest northern bend may carry its axis up to roughly 150 km east before the narrowest northern section.
• Around the Wood Elf settlement's temperate latitude, provisionally apply the nominal 2000 km width and 20/80 split. With Tidefall's eastern coast at about +1.5 to +2.5 degrees E, this places the range near -21 to -20 degrees and the western coast near -26.5 to -25.5 degrees.
• The 24-68 degrees N chart axis is a continental construction envelope. Visited places occupy a much narrower geographic band; colder or hotter climate equivalents must not be selected as geographic coordinates.
• Each plot value below is one internally consistent representative, not surveyed canon. Ranges express the remaining freedom around it.

Working Location Registry

This generated table contains discrete point representatives from the GeoPackage locations layer. gis/world-map.gpkg is authoritative for these exact working coordinates and registry metadata; they remain drafting estimates rather than surveyed story canon. Longitude is relative to the Wood Elf settlement datum. Regional interpretation and canon reasoning remain hand-maintained below.

Regional Geographic Interpretation

Temperate-Band Longitude Frame

This generated diagram uses the GIS representative points near 50 degrees N; it is not a claim that every latitude has the same coast or range longitude. The broader ranges in the regional table and author assumptions remain the uncertainty envelope around these exact working points.

Climate Equivalents At A Glance

These are climate analogues, not a second geographic plot. The visited mainland route remains geographically compressed around 46-56 degrees N; aridity, exposure, continentality, rain shadow and altitude account for much of the larger climatic spread. The Eastern Island highlands and mountains are colder mainly through altitude.

Working XY Location Plot

This generated Mermaid quadrantChart uses the GIS locations and construction_points layers. The visible axes represent -27 to +19 degrees relative longitude and 45 to 68 degrees N; Mermaid internally requires values normalised to 0-1 by x = (longitude + 27) / 46 and y = (latitude - 45) / 23. The chart uses an approximately equal-distance display aspect ratio at 50 degrees N: the longitude span is about 3288 km and the latitude span about 2558 km, giving chartHeight / chartWidth ~= 0.78. It is not a true map projection, and east-west distance contracts farther north. Green points use explicit representative coordinates from the table. Orange points marked * are provisional macro frames or locations whose route geometry remains unresolved.

The taper frames are construction checks rather than coast canon: approximately 1800 km wide at Rimeholt's 52.4 degrees N plot (-25.8 to +0.8 degrees), 1410 km at 60 degrees N, 970 km at 64 degrees N, and 660 km at the 67.5 degrees N neck. This makes the narrowing gradual and puts the 500-800 km minimum well north of provisional Crownholt.

GIS Coastline Draft

The generated HTML embeds the current landmass polygons, routes, and locations exported from the GeoPackage through gis/source/*.geojson. Construction controls remain available in the standalone GIS atlas but are hidden by default and omitted from this embedded map.

GIS Feature Inventory

This generated catalogue exposes the current non-point GIS features without promoting their working geometry or blank attributes to prose canon. Narrative meaning and unresolved qualifications remain in the surrounding manual sections and owning canon files.

Merrowford and Ian–Lethira Homestead GIS Detail

This full-width local view follows the western approach from Merrowford to Ian and Lethira's jointly owned western freeholding, including the town's provisional built-up extent and palisade, the riverfront, public and shared access tracks, buildings, ground features, and the holding's narrow stream. The regional point-to-point route is omitted because it is a travel scaffold rather than a surveyed road.

Early East-Side Geometry

• Green Road exits the Elven Woods through the eastern river gap and reaches Merrowford by travelling east.
• Merrowford is the first human town east of the Elven Woods.
• Merrowford is less than a week from the Woods.
• Thomas's family village/farm lies east of Merrowford.
• From the family crossroads, Merrowford lies west, and the Elven Woods lie farther west beyond that.

Author Assumptions

These are author-supplied map premises. They are fixed for map construction even where chapter prose does not establish them, but should not be presented elsewhere as prose-derived canon unless they are migrated into an owning canon file.

• Seal positions are story-function anchors rather than surveyed objects: first under Crown Deep/Northern Kingdom; second under dark-elf authority on Eastern Island; third-seal containment approach on Fallen Isle north-west of Black Lock. The second seal may not have a visible object beyond it. Ch.207 shows the third containment boundary is extant but its administration is invalid/hostile; do not map it as a simple destroyed door.
• The Black Lock is within the central mountain range, at a low point followed by one or more rivers or former river courses. Its old gates, spill-roads, channels, and underflows belong to this mountain drainage corridor.
• Karrick Gate is slightly east of the Wood Elf settlement. Combined with the narrated northward journey, place Karrick Gate north and a little east of the settlement.
• Rimeholt lies slightly west of Karrick Gate, but the east-west component must remain small enough for the narrated travel times. The working plot uses about 18 km of east-west separation.
• Hearthmere lies halfway, in east-west terms only, between Rimeholt and Karrick Gate. The working plot puts it about 9 km west of Karrick and 9 km east of Rimeholt; its narrated north-south relationship remains unchanged.
• Use an average speed of 5 knots for the Tidefall Haven -> Westhook crossing. Over four continuous sailing days this gives a working sea gap of 480 nautical miles, approximately 890 km or 550 statute miles.
• Standard party walking progress is 25 km/day under ordinary road and weather conditions.
• The central mountain range lies slightly west of the continent's centre: approximately 1/5 of the land lies west of it and 4/5 east, excluding the narrow mountain band itself.
• Use a nominal continental envelope of 5000 km north-south by 2000 km east-west. Allow approximately +5% / -20% variation in major extents, plus local inlets, peninsulas, bays, and outliers.
• Keep the continent about 1400-1800 km wide around Rimeholt. Place the structural 500-800 km narrowest cross-section north of both Rimeholt and Crownholt; the 20/80 range split is an overall continental proportion, not a mandatory ratio at every latitude.
• Keep the central range broadly north-south, normally within about 100 km of its main axis, with a modest eastward bend of no more than roughly 150 km approaching the northern neck.
• Form the northern taper gradually north of Crownholt, mainly by retreating the eastern coastline westward, with a smaller eastward contraction of the western coast.
• At the Wood Elf settlement's latitude, use a provisional western coast of ~-26.5 to -25.5 degrees, central range of ~-21 to -20 degrees, and eastern coast of ~+1.5 to +2.5 degrees, all relative to the settlement datum.

• Ch.202 first western camp leaves Black Lock vs north-western wound unresolved; Ch.203 chooses the north-western island/root cause. The route does not enter Black Lock first.

• Ch.203-205 continue west/north-west through refugee/captive roads toward the broken coast; exact daily geometry remains underdefined.

• Ch.206 reaches a hidden mainland cliff settlement and northern passage station. Ch.207 crosses beneath the narrow strait and reaches a hidden island witness egress.

• Ch.208-209 move from the island egress to the lower-hands yard, then west to ash cisterns below the road toward the Broken Court/First Hand/Hell's Peak. Distances remain unmeasured.

Stronger Travel Anchors

• Merrowford -> family farm: 3 days east at ordinary walking pace; the farm is reached late on the third afternoon (Ch. 38-39)
• family farm -> Wood Elf settlement: approximately 5 days west. The fourth night is explicit; the party enters the outer Woods and reaches the settlement after the next narrated morning patrol, but that arrival day is not numbered (Ch. 47)
• Harn's Ford -> Lowmere: approximately 8 days elapsed, including an extra day/night at the spring hollow; the exact Lowmere arrival day is not numbered (Ch. 67-70)
• Lowmere -> Werrin's Cross: 3 days in suitable weather (Ch. 72-73)
• Werrin's Cross -> Cotham Dry: 2 days south (Ch. 73-75)
• Cotham Dry -> Tareth's Gate: approximately 6 days elapsed: four travel days to the improvised hut, one deliberate testing day, then a final day's approach (Ch. 76-78)
• Hest Quay -> Marrowick: 2 days west by road, excluding Green Road's private two-day stop near Hest Quay (Ch. 88)
• Marrowick -> Lower Harl Step: 6 days west by mule train (Ch. 89-93)
• Wood Elf settlement -> Karrick Gate: approximately 6 days north; the fourth evening is explicit and Karrick Gate appears two days later (Ch. 120). Author geometry adds a slight eastward offset.
• Karrick Gate -> Hearthmere: leaves around midday and arrives near dusk on the same day (Ch. 130)

• Hearthmere -> Rimeholt: 3-4 days
• Rimeholt -> Crownholt: 10-14 days by royal carriage, about 3 weeks by ordinary road

• Tidefall Haven -> Westhook: 4-day sea crossing in current voyage conditions; author-assumed average speed of 5 knots gives a working gap of about 480 nautical miles / 890 km
• Westhook -> Larchmeet: approximately 4 days, initially east and then east-south from Rainpost (Ch. 159)
• Larchmeet -> Kethrun: 2 travel days; the first day ends at the testing basin and Kethrun is reached the following day (Ch. 164-165)
• Larchmeet -> Granitethroat: approximately 2 days north, camping below the last ridge and arriving late the next morning (Ch. 172)
• Granitethroat -> Irondeep lower approach: approximately 2 days, reaching Ashbrace Hold before dark on the first day and Irondeep's lower witness approach the next (Ch. 174-175)
• Green Road Compound / Larchmeet area -> Mirefold: about 3 days southward with Nethis guiding; Mirefold is the first small dark-elf holding/informal border by mud rather than formal law (Ch. 192)
• Mirefold -> Willowmere -> dark-elf capital: Willowmere is reached the morning after leaving Mirefold; the capital comes into view after several more wet-road days. Treat total Larchmeet-area-to-capital travel as roughly 8-9 days by road/weather, matching the provisional straight-line separation plus route curvature (Ch. 193).

Elapsed days are stronger evidence for route order and order-of-magnitude separation than for kilometres. Stops, road quality, weather, a mule train, and carriage relays make the different legs unsuitable for conversion with one universal speed.

Eastern Island Minor Route Anchors

• Rainpost: not a village, but a roofed stopping place where Green Road leaves the main Westhook cargo road for the narrower east-south highland track. Its three-faced marker points west, north and east-south; the blank fourth face bears an old shallow circle related only uncertainly to other route, boundary, permission or memory marks. Advice at Westhook favours the upper track beyond Rainpost because the middle bridge is out and the lower way has mud, a tollman and no bridge. (Ch. 159)
• Unnamed testing basin: an abandoned quarry basin reached on the first day from Larchmeet toward Kethrun, off the council road by a hidden track. Green Road camps there after private Rank A-scale utility testing. Thomas leaves a rougher terrace, marked unsafe cut face, shallow pool and other subtle evidence; it remains a route-memory and possible evidence site, not a mapped settlement or named destination. Kethrun is reached the following day. (Ch. 164-165)

Dry-Road Arc Facts

• Tareth's Gate is the last major human city before the dry roads / desert fringe.
• The Black Glass Basin lies near the dry-road route beyond Tareth's Gate.
• The main road normally skirts the Basin by about 2 miles.
• Bracken Shade is where Green Road parts from the Fifth Umber caravan and turns onto the Old East Line.
• Kelrin Lock is reached east of Bracken Shade and the Old East Line; from Kelrin, the Reedlark carries Green Road west through the canal/river system toward Hest Quay and the foothills.
• Marrowick and Lower Harl Step are foothill / staging points before the Old Spill Road and Black Lock frontier.

Northern Arc Facts

• Karrick Gate is reached where the road crosses a deep stone river and the first serious northern hills gather.
• Hearthmere is a tundra-edge settlement north of Karrick Gate.
• Rimeholt is the last reliable Guild town before true northern frontier road conditions.
• Crownholt is the capital of the Northern Human Kingdom, clearly farther inside state structure than Rimeholt.

Eastern Island Facts

• Tidefall Haven is on the eastern mainland coast.

• The current crossing from Tidefall Haven lands at Westhook.

• Westhook is the main west port of the eastern island.

• The eastern island has a northern mountain region.

• The eastern island has a narrow highland middle region.

• The eastern island has southern cool-temperate maritime lowland, wet forest, moor, bog, fen, and exposed coast.

• Great Peak stands on the western side of the island, a little north of the highlands.

• Larchmeet is a highland village suited to Green Road's base.

• Kethrun is a large highland/common-region demi-human city.

• Granitethroat is a deep-dwarf border threshold settlement.

• Westhook to Larchmeet runs east, then east-south; Larchmeet is about four days inland (Ch. 159).

• Kethrun is about two travel days from Larchmeet on the broader council road (Ch. 164-165).

• Granitethroat is reached by a separate north road from Larchmeet, not by travelling through Kethrun (Ch. 171-172).

• Irondeep lies north of Granitethroat beyond the mountain pass. The Great Peak lies west and inward from Irondeep on the sealed deep-road system (Ch. 174-181).

• The dark-elf capital lies where wooded southern lowland gives way to open moor and peat country.

• After Ch. 197, travel south from Green Road's Larchmeet-area base toward the dark-elf court is partially constrained: Mirefold is first small dark-elf holding after about three days; Willowmere lies farther south; the capital is reached after several additional wet-road days. Ch. 197 fixes internal vertical relationship rather than map-scale location: sealed-witness room, lower way, blackwater gallery, old service threshold, and second-seal outer threshold lie beneath/behind the capital's court structures. The exact road name, surveyed geometry, district layout and capital site remain provisional.

• Fallen Isle, the third-seal island, lies north-west of Black Lock across a narrow, demon-rich strait. Its name and reached location are canon through Ch.207-209; exact coastline and dimensions remain GIS working geometry. Facing coastlines and drowned construction suggest a formerly connected/shattered landform.

• Canon/prose landmarks through Ch.209: hidden mainland cliff settlement; mainland passage station; undersea carriage/three pressure divisions; hidden island witness egress; black ravines and stream; lower-hands labour yard; ash cistern refuge; distant Hell's Peak; worker route toward Broken Court/First Hand.

• Infernal Mountains, Hell's Peak, Devil's Tears, and Soulless Bay are the current map vocabulary. Hell's Peak is used in prose; Devil's Tears/Soulless Bay should remain authoring/map labels until explicitly spoken in chapter prose.

• Black Lock is a major mouth/control node feeding upward toward the island, not necessarily a mandatory route waypoint or the root location.

• Do not derive exact coastline, station, yard, cistern or Broken Court coordinates from narrative order alone; update QGIS separately when placements are chosen.

Current Best-Fit Schematic

This is not to scale. It is a best-fit map from current canon plus the explicitly labelled author assumptions above.

Current Best-Fit Defaults

These are not fully locked canon, but they are the best current map assumptions.

• Elven Woods -> Merrowford -> family farm should be treated as a west-to-east chain.
• family farm -> Harn's Ford -> Tareth's Gate should be treated as broadly south; only local legs supply firmer east-west bearings.
• Tareth's Gate -> Bracken Shade -> Old East Line -> Kelrin Lock should be treated as a dry corridor running broadly south-east and then east. The route turns west only after Kelrin, through canal, river, and foothill routes.
• Kelrin Lock -> Hest Quay -> Marrowick -> Lower Harl Step -> Black Lock should be treated as a broad westward swing into a low river corridor within the central mountain range.
• Karrick Gate should be placed north and slightly east of the Wood Elf settlement.
• Across the nominal 2000 km width, the central range should be placed around 400 km from the western edge and 1600 km from the eastern edge. Around Rimeholt the continent remains 1400-1800 km wide. Rimeholt is only slightly west of Karrick, and Hearthmere remains halfway between them on the east-west axis; travel times cap this longitude difference rather than the continental width.
• North of Crownholt, narrow the continent to 500-800 km, chiefly by bringing the eastern coast west. Let the main range bend east by at most about 150 km, rather than moving the whole northern range into the eastern corridor.
• In the temperate cross-section, place the Wood Elf settlement roughly 91-95% of the way from western to eastern coast. Keep Merrowford and the family farm east of it but inland; do not allow independent uncertainty ranges to place the farm beyond Tidefall's coastline.
• Karrick Gate -> Hearthmere -> Rimeholt -> Crownholt remains a northern interior climb into stronger state territory. Their severe climate equivalents must not override the short narrated distances between the first three places.
• Tidefall Haven should be treated as an eastern mainland port.
• Westhook should be treated as the eastern-island landing port used by Green Road; after Ch.214 Kelda returns to the Larchmeet region by ordinary routes.
• Larchmeet should be treated as inland from Westhook in the highlands.
• Kethrun should be treated as an eastward or inland highland road from Larchmeet.
• Granitethroat should be treated as a separate north-road destination from Larchmeet, not as the next stop beyond Kethrun.
• Irondeep lies beyond Granitethroat's northern pass; the Great Peak is west and inward from Irondeep in the deep-road network.
• The dark-elf capital should be treated as south of the highlands where wooded lowland gives way to open moor and peat country. After Ch. 197, the route to it is constrained by Mirefold and Willowmere as provisional intermediate stops, and the capital has an internally fixed lower descent sequence to the second-seal outer threshold. The road name, surveyed course, district layout and exact capital site remain open.

Fallen Isle final-route facts

• The ash cisterns connect to an old return/inspection road beneath Hell's Peak.
• That road reaches a lower return and condition office beneath the Broken Court; a concealed condition stair rises to an observation aperture in the court wall.
• The Broken Court occupies an older circular water hall around the third-seal approach. Its internal bridges, relay crown, claim-braces and central dais are prose-scale interior features rather than established surface coordinates.
• After Ch.213 the containment shaft carries no local load and all true demons are dead. The island remains physically present as a recovery/dismantling region.
• No map route should be drawn from the Broken Court to a confirmed destination for Thomas and Isha.

What Is Still Outstanding

These are the main gaps that still block a more faithful final fantasy map. A targeted prose re-check of the route-bearing chapters narrowed several distances above but did not supply the remaining macro geometry.

Narrowed But Not Exact

• family farm -> Wood Elf settlement is approximately five days, but Chapter 47 does not number the arrival day after the explicit fourth night.
• Harn's Ford -> Lowmere is approximately eight elapsed days including the spring-hollow testing stop, but Lowmere's arrival day is not explicitly numbered.
• Cotham Dry -> Tareth's Gate is approximately six elapsed days including one deliberate testing day; this is five days of forward travel rather than six continuous road days.
• Westhook -> Larchmeet, Larchmeet -> Kethrun, Larchmeet -> Granitethroat, and Granitethroat -> Irondeep have route-compatible representatives, but road curvature and incomplete bearings still prevent surveyed coordinates.

Still Open Geometry

• Exact elapsed time between Kelrin Lock and Hest Quay; the canal voyage is described but not counted. The later Hest Quay -> Marrowick -> Lower Harl Step legs are fixed at two and six road days.
• Exact physical displacement for the now day-counted road legs; 25 km/day gives route length, but not straight-line distance without reliable bearings and curvature.
• Exact macro position of Crownholt within the Northern Kingdom
• Exact onset and outline of the 500-800 km taper north of Crownholt, including how quickly the eastern coast retreats and where the range reaches its modest eastward bend
• Exact temperate coastline curvature; the ~-26.5 / -20.5 / +2 degree frame is a useful nominal cross-section, not a surveyed coast applied north-south

Eastern Mainland / Island Gaps

• Exact north-east / east-central / south-east placement of Tidefall Haven
• Exact relation between the Kethrun road and the separate north road to Granitethroat; the southward route now has approximate elapsed stages and intermediate stops (Mirefold, Willowmere), but still lacks a surveyed course and exact geometry
• Exact relation of Great Peak to Westhook and Kethrun in travel terms
• Precise coast-to-coast measurement and route variation across the author-assumed ~480 nautical mile / 890 km sea gap
• Exact distribution of sheltered wet forest, farmland, open moor, blanket bog, fen, salt marsh, estuaries, and exposed coast around the dark-elf capital
• Whether the lower receiving house / sealed-witness room / second-seal outer threshold, and Fallen Isle lower return office / condition stair / Broken Court interior, should ever be represented as interior map features rather than prose-only layout

Intentional Underdefinition

• Name and exact site of the dark-elf capital
• Named roads between Westhook, Larchmeet, Kethrun, Granitethroat, Mirefold, Willowmere, and the dark-elf south
• Names and sites of most other island settlements
• Exact placement of the six lesser great peaks and six major deep-dwarf clans
